Authenticity is Sexy: How Identifying Your Target Audience Can Make Your Solopreneur Brand Irresistible

In 2023, the world is so fast-paced and hyper-connected that starting your own solopreneur service company can be exciting, overwhelming, and damn near scary all at once. With everyone competing for the same customers, establishing a strong brand presence can be the difference between success and failure. But there is definitely one part of establishing that presence that, when done correctly, makes it a little easier.
One key aspect of discovering or building a successful brand is identifying and finding your target audience. Understanding the unique needs and preferences of your audience can help you create a brand that authentically represents you and appeals to the clients that are looking for your particular service. Once you identify them, your branding and marketing becomes a lot more precise and intentional making it easier for them to locate you, even in a crowded market of folks doing what you do.
Identifying your target audience can be achieved through market research, customer feedback, and with your own working knowledge of your industry. Knowing who you’re focused on can give you valuable insights into your their needs, preferences, and behaviors, allowing you to tailor your brand messaging and marketing efforts accordingly. Knowing some basic identifying features about your audience helps you to be the one to address them and relate to them via social media, blog posts, podcasting, and any other ways that you distribute information.
My method of identifying the target audiences of my clients is to first determine the age range, ratio of male to female or other, determine a salary range, and then to create these folks based on who the company services currently as regular clients, who they service currently as occasional clients, and who they’d like to service as an ideal client. Once we have established all of this, we then work together to create client personas of these people, including names, photos, and a brief summary of who they are.
In the true spirit of transparency, I will share with you one of my own target audience personas to illustrate what the process looks like and so that you can see how easy it is to focus on them once you know them. My client base is Black folks in their 40’s and 50’s making no less than $90k annually. Ladies are more open to my service so I will focus on a 2:1 ratio of women to men. These people are not real and any similarity to actual people is truly coincidental. Meet Kiya.
